Making Career in Biotechnology Stream

The field of Biotechnology also known as intelligent bioscience is quickly gaining ground among the new generation of India. There is immense possibility of making a superb career in this stream.

What is Biotechnology?

Biotechnology, as the name suggests, is the study of technologies used in biology, especially genetics. Streams like Molecular Biology, Agricultural Engineering, Tissue Culture, fisheries, Genetics - All find application in Biotechnology. The main aim of Biotechnology is to create genetically modified plus improved organisms and other products such as medicines, food, animal feed, industrial materials and agricultural products. It uses Biology along with other popular sciences like Chemistry, Genetics, Engineering, Virology, Immunology and so on.

Applications of Biotechnology

Biotechnology touches almost all the important scientific streams. Hence, its use is also diverse. The conception of genetically improved varieties of organisms makes it one of the most beneficial branches of science. It has given a lot to humanity and a lot remains to be given.

The following are the major fields of application of Biotechnology,

  • Detecting and treating hereditary diseases such as anemia, Huntingun's disease, cystic fibrosis and some blood related disorders.
  • Producing drugs and substances to treat the dreadful diseases like AIDS, cancer, heart disease, dwarfism and other many other diseases.
  • Making genetically modified plants and organisms that are disease tolerant and adaptable.
  • Used in agriculture and plant science to produce the varieties of crops and seeds with desirable nutritional attributes.
  • Applied in the field of veterinary medicine and animal science for the production of different vaccines, antibodies and growth hormones.
  • Also used in the areas of energy production, waste management, mining, law enforcement and so on.

Course Structure and Study Options

A Biotechnology course generally comprises of subjects like Genetics, Cell Biology, Biostatistics, Enzymology, Metabolism, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Molecular Biophysics, Analytical Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Biophysics, Bioinformatics and so on. You can pursue a graduate degree program (4 years) after completing your plus 2 in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The post graduate program is of 2 years duration. To apply for admission in a post graduate program, you should be a graduate in a related field such as Biotechnology, BDS/B Pharma Medical, Biology, Microbiology, Horticulture, Forestry, Clinical Microbiology, Bioinformatics or an equivalent degree. A doctorate degree in the discipline would require 3 more years of your time.
